A pilates retreat over 50: why the reformer suits you better than a mat
8 November 2026 · 2 min read · Isla Pilates Samui

Half of the people on a reformer at Isla are over forty, and a good share are past fifty or sixty. That is not an accident of who holidays on Koh Samui. It is because the reformer is the kindest piece of equipment ever built for a body that has been used for a few decades, and a week of it does things a gym cannot.
Why the machine, not the mat
On a mat, getting up and down from the floor is the hardest part of the class for many people over fifty, and the floor gives no support to a stiff back or a replaced hip. The reformer is at bench height. The springs support as much as they resist: a leg press with light springs is gentler than a bodyweight squat, and the straps let you move a shoulder through its full range with the load taken off the joint. It is the reason physiotherapists send people to reformer studios.
What a week does
- Balance. Standing work on a moving carriage trains the small stabilisers that fall asleep with desk years.
- Hips and lower back. Daily hip opening and spinal articulation, with support, is what most people this age come for and what they notice first.
- Strength without strain. Springs let the teacher load exactly what a joint can take that morning.
- A habit. Seven consecutive classes is enough for the movements to feel familiar, which is what makes people keep going at home.
How the retreat keeps it safe
Say what hurts when you book, and again on the first morning. The teacher sets your springs and swaps any movement that does not suit, and a class is never more than ten people, so nobody is out of sight. If you would rather start alone, a private session on the first day is a good way to learn the machine before joining the group. the Isla retreat covers the rooms — the studio apartment has a short walk to the studio, the others are a ride away, and the ride is included either way.
Do it somewhere warm, for as long as you like
the Isla retreat is a reformer class every day on Koh Samui, on the dates you choose — from three nights, with your ride to the studio and back included and a room you pick. Nothing is charged until a person has confirmed your room. If you would rather start with one class, the timetable is the place.
