Koh Samui or Bali for a pilates retreat? An honest comparison
26 September 2026 · 2 min read · Isla Pilates Samui

Bali is the default answer. It has more retreats, more studios, more Instagram. So it is worth saying plainly where Koh Samui is the better choice, where Bali is, and where it makes no difference at all.
Getting there
Samui has its own airport, twenty minutes from Bophut, with direct flights from Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong. You land, you are collected, you are at your room within half an hour. Bali means Denpasar, and then a drive to Canggu or Ubud that can run past ninety minutes in traffic. If your retreat is short — three, four, five nights — that hour each way is a real share of it.
Weather
The two islands are wet at different times. Samui's rainy months are October and November, with the dry season from December through to April and warm green shoulders either side. Bali's rain runs roughly December to March. So a January retreat suits Samui; a July one suits either. If you can only travel in the northern winter, Samui is the drier bet.
Price
Bali is cheaper for a room and a meal, Samui is not far behind, and the retreat itself is the bigger line either way. What matters more is what the price includes. Many Bali retreats sell a fixed week with a group that arrives together; Isla sells the retreat by the night, on your dates, so a four-night stay costs four nights, not a week.
The feel
Canggu is a scene: surf, cafés, a crowd that is half digital nomad. Ubud is jungle and ceremony. Bophut is a fishing village on a quiet coast with one good street and a beach you can walk for an hour. If you want to be somewhere, Bali. If you want to be left alone to do the work and read by a pool, Samui.
The thing that decides it
The machine. Bali has many mat and yoga retreats and a handful of reformer studios; a daily reformer class as the spine of a retreat is rare there. Isla is a ten-reformer studio, and the retreat is a class on it every day. If the reformer is the point, the Isla retreat is the comparison to make. If you are not sure it is, the guide to reformer pilates in Koh Samui says what one class is like.
Do it somewhere warm, for as long as you like
the Isla retreat is a reformer class every day in Bophut, Koh Samui, on the dates you choose — from three nights, with your ride to the studio and back included and a room you pick. Nothing is charged until a person has confirmed your room. If you would rather start with one class, the timetable is the place.
